1965年には映画化され、主人公Mariaを演じるJulie Andrewsが歌っている。
「バラに滴る雨のしずく 子猫のひげ」から始まるお気に入りの数々を並べ、最後に「悲しい気分になった時、お気に入りのものをただ思い浮かべれば、いやな気分もなくなるの。」と結ばれる歌詞がユニーク。
ジャズ・ナンバーとしてジョン・コルトレーンなど多くのアーティストがカバーしている。クリスマス・ソングとしてもポピュラー。日本ではJR東海のCMで様々なアレンジで使われている。
